The best thing about winter!
If I could, I would probably just skip winter all together. And yet, while I despise the cold, winter in Japan does bring with it one of my favorite things: CRAB!! Warning: if you’re a vegetarian or hate these tasty crustaceans you might want to stop reading now.
My crab smorgasbord came courtesy of Takahiro and Ryohei’s generosity. Thank god they were there because I honestly would have had no idea what I was doing. Growing up in Colorado I almost never had crab, let alone be served an entire crab. Luckily the staff could see I was new to the crack-my-own process and offered a few tips on not letting any of deliciousness inside the crab go to waste.
And waste we didn’t! We cleared course after course of various types of crabs that were all uniquely prepared. My personal fave was the crab nabe which unfortunately came at the end when I was near exploding. If you haven’t yet filled yourself full on crab this season, there is still a little time. Crab fishing of certain varieties, is limited to winter months so I recommend getting them before they crawl away!
