Bashodo – Traditional Mochi in Osaka
Originally a shop that only sold mochi, Bashodo is one of the few places you can buy traditional Japanese mochi and Japanese sweets in Osaka! With a history of 147 years, Bashodo is a mochi shop that has been adored by many, for their neko mochi. The name, neko mochi is actually very common in the kansai area; for centuries, the long mochi are called ‘neko mochi’ for their resemblance of a cat’s long, round arm. With 7 different flavors, the mochi uses 100% Shiga mochi rice and there is no added preservatives.
The kneading process is what makes Bashodo’s mochi so special; they still take on the traditions that have been passed down by generation. Using a tool called a ki-ne (a wooden mallet) they knead the mochi inside a traditional ishi-usu (stone bowl) to mash the rice into a chewy, mochi consistency. From there, the mochi is molded into the cat-arm-like shape.
You may purchase these neko mochi at each shop! There are many ways in eating mochi; you simply cut up the long mochi to your desired size and grill it on a mesh grill or cook it in some soup! It’s all up to you!
